Abington
Old York Road suburbs and the collections in their closets
Old York Road was a colonial route north out of Philadelphia, and the suburbs along it filled in as the railroad and later the automobile pushed the city outward. Jenkintown, Elkins Park, Glenside, Abington and Huntingdon Valley each have their own character, from Jenkintown's compact borough blocks to the ranch houses and split-levels of Huntingdon Valley.
Elkins Park is named for William Lukens Elkins, and the Gilded Age left big houses across this area. Lynnewood Hall, built for Peter A. B. Widener, still stands in Elkins Park, and Grey Towers Castle is now part of Arcadia University in Glenside. Most of the coins we buy here come from more ordinary homes, and many of them come from careful hobby collectors who bought from the Mint every year.
That habit leaves stacks of proof sets and mint sets, proof Silver Eagles in their presentation boxes and commemorative half dollars still in their capsules. Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, and some mint sets hold coins collectors still want, but plenty of modern clad sets sell for close to face value. We price each set and tell you plainly which is which.
Some collectors in Jenkintown and Elkins Park took the next step and had their coins graded by PCGS or NGC. A slab shows the grade on the Sheldon scale from 1 to 70, yet two coins with the same number can differ in eye appeal and demand. We look at each coin through the plastic ourselves before we quote it. The township has its share of coin jars, too. Wheat cents, Buffalo nickels and pre-1965 dimes from Roslyn and Willow Grove homes are sorted in front of you, silver apart from clad and better dates apart from common ones.
Gold jewelry comes up in nearly every downsizing call from these towns: a class ring from Abington or Cheltenham High, a charm bracelet, earrings from a wedding fifty years ago. We sort it by karat, test it without acid and weigh it in front of you. Appointments are one-on-one with the meeting place set when you book, and owners of larger estates in Rydal, Meadowbrook or anywhere else in the township can ask about a home visit. Sellers need a government-issued photo ID, and anyone who declines the offer keeps the jewelry, the coins and the written list.

Questions
Selling coins and gold in Abington
My mother bought proof sets every year. Are the newer ones worth anything?
Some are, and some are close to face. Sets with 90% silver coins carry metal value, and certain years draw collectors, while many clad proof sets from recent decades sell for little over face. We price each set separately so you can see where the value sits.
Can I meet you somewhere near Jenkintown?
We set the meeting place with you when you book, since we work by appointment only. Every appointment is private and one-on-one. If you are handling a larger collection or an estate in Elkins Park, Abington or Huntingdon Valley, ask about a home visit.
Should I take the coins out of their PCGS holders to show you?
No, leave them sealed. The holder protects the coin and carries the grade the service assigned, and breaking it out can lower what the coin brings. We read the label, look at the coin through the plastic and price it on current collector demand.
