Trenton
Silver dollars and family coins from a capital city
Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas night in 1776 and won the Battle of Trenton the next morning. The Old Barracks, where Hessian troops were quartered that winter, still stands near the State House, and Trenton has been the capital of New Jersey since 1790.
For a long stretch after that it was a factory city. The sign reading Trenton Makes, The World Takes still lights up the Lower Trenton Bridge, a holdover from the years when Roebling wire rope, Lenox china and dozens of potteries shipped out of town. Families who worked those jobs lived in Chambersburg, Villa Park, North Trenton and the West Ward. Chambersburg was long the city's Italian neighborhood, known for its bakeries and tomato pie. Those families' children and grandchildren moved out to Hamilton, Ewing and Lawrence, taking the family coins with them.
Silver dollars come out of Mercer County homes often. Morgan dollars were struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, and Peace dollars from 1921 to 1935. Each one is 90% silver, weighs 26.73 grams and holds 0.7734 troy ounces. Philadelphia Morgans carry no mint mark, so the small letter on the back matters: an O, S or CC can change what a coin is worth, and so can the grade. We sort every dollar for date, mint mark and condition before we look at silver value.
Pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves, 1965 to 1970 Kennedy halves at 40% silver, and war nickels from 1942 to 1945 usually come along in the same box. Many Trenton families also have coins from relatives who came from Italy and other parts of Europe, a few old lire or a handful of European silver kept in a drawer for sentimental reasons. We identify world coins by country, date, weight and fineness, and price each one on its metal or on collector demand, whichever is higher.
Many of the sellers we meet from Mercer County are clearing a parent's house after a long life there. We do not have a counter in Trenton. Meetings are private and set when you book, with nobody else in the room, and a large estate can ask about a home visit. You see every test and every weight, and you leave with the written list whether or not you sell. If you accept, you are paid at that visit by cash, check or wire.

Questions
Selling coins and gold in Trenton
How do I tell if my grandfather's silver dollars from Trenton are worth more than silver?
Look at the date and the small mint mark on the back. Philadelphia coins have no mark, while O, S and CC coins came from other mints. Date, mint mark and grade together decide whether a dollar is worth more than its 0.7734 troy ounces of silver.
Do you buy foreign coins from Mercer County families?
World gold and silver coins are a regular part of what we buy, including old European pieces that relatives brought over. Each coin is identified by country, date, weight and fineness. Some sell for metal and some carry collector value, and the written offer shows which.
Where do we meet if I live in Hamilton or Ewing?
We pick a private place together when you book, since we work by appointment only, with no counter and no audience. Call 215-798-9204, and if the collection is large or part of a whole estate, ask about a home visit.
