Main Line

Main Line estates, from Merion to Paoli

The Main Line takes its name from the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line west of the city, and its towns grew up around the stations: Overbrook, Merion, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova, Radnor, Wayne and Paoli. Many of the big stone houses near those stops date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when Philadelphia families built country places along the tracks. Narberth and Ardmore have more twins and smaller houses near their stations, and those homes send us coin jars as often as full estates.

Estates of that age often hold gold from the years when it still circulated. Liberty and Saint-Gaudens double eagles and small $5 and $2.50 gold pieces given as gifts sit in Main Line safes beside Krugerrands from the 1970s and 1980s and Gold Eagles bought after 1986. Each type is priced differently. Pre-1933 coins can carry collector value above their gold, while modern bullion follows the live spot price.

Some Main Line collections were built over decades and come with dealer invoices and grading holders: PCGS and NGC slabs, early proof sets, Bust and Seated Liberty silver. We read each label and look at the coin inside, because the assigned grade and current collector demand set the price. Keep the invoices with the coins, since they help us identify what a parent bought and when.

Home visits make the most sense here, where one estate can fill a safe and several closets. If you are settling a parent's house in Haverford or Villanova, ask about having us come to the home so the coins stay put until you decide. The family, the executor or the estate attorney can sit in, and each person sees every coin tested and weighed.

Plenty of Main Line calls are smaller. Sellers moving out of a large house into a smaller place often have a single box with a few Silver Eagles, a tube of Morgan dollars and a grandmother's charm bracelet. Those get a private appointment set when you book, the same written offer, payment by cash, check or wire at the same visit if you accept, and no obligation if you do not. Gold jewelry from these estates gets the same care. Signed pieces and antique brooches may be worth more as jewelry, so we set them aside and say so before pricing the rest by karat and weight.

How selling works from Main Line

  1. 1

    Call or send the form

Tell us roughly what you have. We call back the same business day and set a private appointment at a time that suits you.

  2. 2

    Bring everything as it is

Don't clean, polish or sort. Bring the jars, albums and jewelry box, plus a government-issued photo ID if you plan to sell.

  3. 3

    Watch each piece get checked

Date, mint mark and grade for coins. Karat for gold. Non-destructive testing and a calibrated scale, right in front of you.

  4. 4

Take the written offer, or don't

Say yes and get paid that visit by cash, check or wire. Say no and leave with everything plus the item-by-item list.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Main Line

Will you come to an estate in Bryn Mawr or Villanova?

For larger collections and estates, yes, you can ask about a home visit when you call. Everything is sorted, tested and weighed at the house with the family or executor present. Nothing has to leave until you accept the written offer, and you can decline and keep it all.

My father's coins came with PCGS and NGC holders and old dealer invoices. Do those help?

They do. A slab confirms the grade a service assigned, and invoices show what was bought and when. We still look at each coin, since demand and eye appeal move prices. Keep everything together, and do not break any coin out of its holder before we see it.

Can you pay by wire for a large estate sale?

Wire is available. For larger sales you can be paid by wire, as well as by check or cash, at the same visit you accept the offer. The written, item-by-item list goes with the payment, which helps executors and families keep a clear record of what was sold.
