Media

Estate coins and old silver from the county seat

Media has been the Delaware County seat since the middle of the 1800s, when county business moved up from Chester, and the courthouse still sits in the center of town. A lot of estates get settled here. Coin collections often surface for the first time in that process, when a will is read and someone remembers the locked box on the top shelf of a parent's closet.

The trolley still runs down State Street past the Media Theatre and the restaurants, and the side streets on either side are lined with older twins and single homes that have stayed with one family for decades. Sellers from those blocks usually call us while they are clearing out a mother's or father's house. We see proof sets ordered from the Mint every year from the 1950s on, Kennedy halves kept in a coffee can, Morgan dollars wrapped in tissue paper and cigar boxes of wheat cents nobody has sorted since the 1970s.

Swarthmore grew up around the college Quakers founded there in 1864. Faculty families and longtime residents in Swarthmore, Wallingford and Rose Valley often kept tidy, labeled collections, such as a grandfather's type set of Seated Liberty silver or a run of Indian Head cents pressed into cardboard folders. Those collections are well organized, but the labels almost never say what the coins bring today. Out toward Ridley Creek State Park and Tyler Arboretum, larger properties sometimes hold larger lots, with gold coins and bullion mixed in among the albums.

Executors and siblings make up a big share of the people we meet from central Delaware County. Our written, item-by-item offer helps when three or four heirs need to look at the same numbers, and an estate attorney can keep a copy with the rest of the file. Before anything is priced, we separate collector coins from melt coins, so a scarce-date Indian Head cent or an early proof coin is never lumped in with junk silver and paid as metal.

Each meeting in Media is private and is set up when you book, and a family with a whole house of coins can ask about a home visit. You watch every step, from the check of date, mint mark and grade to the non-destructive metal test and the calibrated scale. If you accept, you are paid at that same visit. If you decline, you keep every coin along with the written list.

How selling works from Media

  1. 1

    Call or send the form

Tell us roughly what you have. We call back the same business day and set a private appointment at a time that suits you.

  2. 2

    Bring everything as it is

Don't clean, polish or sort. Bring the jars, albums and jewelry box, plus a government-issued photo ID if you plan to sell.

  3. 3

    Watch each piece get checked

Date, mint mark and grade for coins. Karat for gold. Non-destructive testing and a calibrated scale, right in front of you.

  4. 4

Take the written offer, or don't

Say yes and get paid that visit by cash, check or wire. Say no and leave with everything plus the item-by-item list.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Media

I am the executor of an estate in Media. Can you help me divide a coin collection?

Yes. We give you a written, item-by-item offer that lists every coin, so each heir sees the same numbers and your attorney can keep a copy. It is not a certified appraisal for court or tax filings, but many families find it useful when deciding who takes what.

Where do we meet if I live in Swarthmore or Wallingford?

The meeting place is set privately when you book. We work by appointment only, with no counter and no line. If the collection is large or part of a full estate, you can ask about a home visit when you call 215-798-9204.

My parents bought proof sets every year. Are they worth more than face?

Many are. Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, so they are worth at least their silver, and some years and coins carry a collector premium on top. We check each set in front of you and list it separately on your written offer.

Find out what your coins and gold are worth. Then decide.
