Haddonfield

Early coins and old notes from a Quaker town

In 1858 the bones of a Hadrosaurus came out of a marl pit in Haddonfield, one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons anyone had found up to that time. The borough still keeps a statue of its Hadrosaurus downtown, and local schoolchildren learn the story early.

The town is older than its dinosaur fame. Elizabeth Haddon, a young Quaker woman, came over from England in 1701 to manage her father's land here, and the Indian King Tavern on Kings Highway is where the New Jersey legislature met in 1777. The old houses along Kings Highway and the side streets off it span two centuries or more, and many have stayed in one family for a long time, which is why so much in them never got thrown out.

Quaker thrift and old houses tend to produce a certain kind of collection. We see large cents a great-grandparent saved, Indian Head cents in a leather pouch, Seated Liberty dimes and halves, and now and then a large-size note printed before 1929. National Bank Notes deserve a close look. They carry the name of the local bank that issued them, and notes from small South Jersey banks draw regional collectors who pay well above face. Silver certificates and red seal notes also turn up, often tucked inside family Bibles and old books.

A problem we often find in Haddonfield estates is a well-meant cleaning. Somebody polished the old pennies for a grandchild's school project, or scrubbed a Bust half to see the date better. A cleaned coin grades lower than the same coin left alone, and collectors pay for original surfaces, so please bring coins exactly as you found them, in their envelopes, folders or paper rolls. We grade each one in front of you for date, mint mark, condition and eye appeal, and we explain why one coin is worth more than its neighbor.

Many residents would rather not carry a box of old coins and currency into a shop on Kings Highway, where neighbors might see. Many of these calls come from grown children who were raised in town and are now clearing out the family house. We meet privately by appointment, at a place set when you book, and owners of larger estates can ask about a home visit. The evaluation is free. You get the offer in writing, and if you decide not to sell, every coin and note goes home with you.

Date, mint mark and grade for coins. Karat for gold. Non-destructive testing and a calibrated scale, right in front of you.

Say yes and get paid that visit by cash, check or wire. Say no and leave with everything plus the item-by-item list.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Haddonfield

My grandmother's Haddonfield house had old pennies in a jar. What should I do?

Leave them as they are and keep them dry. Do not wash or polish them, because cleaning lowers the grade. Bring the whole jar to a private appointment and we will sort out any large cents, Flying Eagle or Indian Head cents and better-date wheat cents.

Do you buy old bank notes from South Jersey?

We buy all kinds of old notes. National Bank Notes issued from 1863 to 1935 carry the name of the local bank, and collectors look for notes from small South Jersey towns. We also buy large-size notes, silver certificates, red seals and star notes, each priced on condition and demand.

Can you visit an estate in Haddonfield?

A home visit is something you can request for a larger collection or estate when you call 215-798-9204. Otherwise we meet at a private appointment set when you book. Either way it is one-on-one, and the offer is written out item by item.
