Northeast Philadelphia

Rowhouses, twins and the coffee cans in the basement

The Northeast filled in fast after World War II. Block after block of brick rowhouses and twins went up off Roosevelt Boulevard in Mayfair, Oxford Circle, Rhawnhurst and Bustleton, and many of the couples who bought them in the 1950s stayed for the rest of their lives. Somerton and Fox Chase added singles and twins on the city's edge, and those houses have their own long-time owners.

Fifty or sixty years at one address leaves a lot of change behind. Children and grandchildren call us after finding a coffee can of quarters in the basement or a dresser drawer full of Kennedy halves. Dimes, quarters and halves dated before 1965 are 90% silver, and $1 in face value of them holds about 0.715 troy ounces of silver. Kennedy halves from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver, and the 1942 to 1945 war nickels carry 35%. We separate all of it in front of you, then look for the better dates hiding in the pile.

Frankford was a town of its own long before it became a neighborhood, and the El has run above Frankford Avenue for about a century. Older homes there and in Fox Chase sometimes give up Morgan and Peace dollars, Indian Head cents and wheat cent folders that someone started in the 1940s and never finished. Bank bags of wheat cents are common too. Most of those coins are worth a little over face, but every so often a scarce date is sitting in the middle of the bag.

Gold jewelry comes out of almost every Northeast estate. Wedding bands, chains, charm bracelets, broken earrings and class rings from Northeast High or Father Judge all end up on our scale. We sort each piece by karat, read stamps like 10K, 14K, 585 and 750, test without acid and weigh in grams. Gold-filled and plated pieces get pointed out so you know which ones hold real gold, and dental gold is bought by weight.

Many sellers here would rather not carry a can of silver into a pawn shop on the Boulevard or answer a stranger's questions at a hotel buying event. We meet by appointment only, with the place set when you book, and larger collections and estates can ask about a home visit. Many of our Northeast sellers are in their seventies and eighties and want a calm appointment where every coin gets explained, and that is how we run it. Bring a photo ID, read through the written list and take as long as you need to decide.

Questions

Selling coins and gold in Northeast Philadelphia

My dad left a basement full of coin rolls in his Mayfair house. Where do I start?

Leave the rolls closed and do not clean anything. Call us, and we will set a private appointment, or a home visit if the amount is large. We open and sort the rolls with you, pull out the silver and better dates, and give you a written offer for each group.

Do you buy broken gold jewelry and single earrings?

We buy all of it. Broken chains, single earrings, bent rings and dental gold are all bought for their gold content. We sort them by karat, test them without acid or scratching and weigh them on a calibrated scale, so you can see how each part of the offer is figured.

Are Kennedy half dollars worth more than 50 cents?

Many are. 1964 Kennedy halves are 90% silver, and those from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver, so both carry metal value above face. Most later halves are worth face unless they are proofs or in unusually fine condition. We separate them for you at the appointment.
