Chester
Coin jars and gold from a river city that built ships
Chester is the oldest city in Pennsylvania. Swedish settlers had a village here called Upland, and when William Penn came ashore there in 1682 he renamed it Chester. The city served as the Delaware County seat until county business moved to Media in the 1800s.
For most of the twentieth century Chester made things. Sun Ship built tankers and cargo ships on the Delaware, Ford assembled cars on the waterfront, and Scott Paper ran its mills here. Those jobs filled rowhouses across the city and in Upland, Eddystone, Trainer and Marcus Hook. The families who held them saved money the way working people did, a little at a time, and a lot of that saving ended up in coffee cans and coin jars.
Silver war nickels from 1942 to 1945, which are 35% silver, often come out of Chester estates by the handful, along with pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves picked out of change for years. Those older coins are 90% silver, and $1 in face value holds about 0.715 troy ounces. We weigh them in front of you and price them on the live spot price. Any better dates in the pile, like a scarce Mercury dime or a Walking Liberty half in high grade, get pulled out and priced as collector coins.
Gold comes out of these homes too, mostly wedding bands, class rings, chains and the occasional gold watch from a retirement. We sort it by karat, test it without acid or scratching, and weigh it on a calibrated scale. Paper money turns up nearly as often. Silver certificates and red seal notes are common finds, and a National Bank Note printed for a Delaware County bank can bring more than face because regional collectors look for them.
Down the river, Ridley Park, Prospect Park and Essington have the same mix of longtime families and inherited coin jars. Governor Printz Park in Essington marks where the Swedish colony set up its capital in 1643, so this stretch of the Delaware has been settled about as long as any place in the state. Nobody here should have to carry a can of old silver into a pawn shop to find out what it is worth. We meet by appointment only, set privately when you call, with nobody else in the room. Take cash, a check or a wire at that same visit, or say no and keep it all.

Questions
Selling coins and gold in Chester
I found a can of old nickels in my grandfather's house in Chester. Are they silver?
Check the dates. Nickels dated 1942 to 1945 with a large mint mark above Monticello are 35% silver war nickels. Other Jefferson nickels are not silver. Bring the whole can and we will sort them in front of you and weigh the silver ones.
Do you buy broken gold jewelry from the river towns?
Broken pieces count the same as whole ones. We buy broken chains, single earrings, old class rings and dental gold by weight. Each piece is sorted by karat, tested without acid or scratching and weighed on a calibrated scale, and the offer is tied to the live spot price for gold.
Is there a Chester location I can walk into?
No. We work by appointment only, which keeps every meeting private, with no counter and no line. The place is set when you book. Call 215-798-9204 and we will return your call the same business day.
