Proof and mint sets in Philadelphia
Sell Proof Sets and Mint Sets in Philadelphia
Plenty of families around Philadelphia bought a proof set or mint set from the Mint year after year, and those sets now sit in closets and dresser drawers. We separate the silver years from the clad ones and the better sets from the common ones, then write an offer for each.
Private appointments across Greater Philadelphia. We call back the same business day.
How proof and mint sets are priced
Most sets are priced on what is inside. Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, so their metal sets a floor. Clad sets sell on collector demand, which is steady for some years and thin for others. Condition still counts: cloudy toning, a cracked case or a coin missing from the holder all change the number. Each set gets its own line on your written offer.
What sets the offer on a proof or mint set
- The year tells us whether a set holds 90% silver coins or clad ones.
- Original Mint packaging, with its sleeve or box, helps the price.
- Haze, spots or milky toning on proof coins can lower an offer.
- A set with a missing or swapped coin is priced as loose coins.
- Collector demand for that year's set decides the rest.

Selling in Philadelphia
Mint sets from the hometown of the Mint
Today's Philadelphia Mint opened in 1969 on Independence Mall, near the Liberty Bell, and it is the fourth Mint building in the city's history. Some families here got in the habit of ordering a proof set or mint set every year, often one for each child or grandchild, and kept at it for decades.
Those sets come out of closets in Northeast Philly twins, Main Line colonials and Cherry Hill split levels, sometimes forty or fifty in a row, each still in its sleeve. Most sellers want to know which ones are worth more than face value. A long run of sets usually holds a few strong ones and a lot that sell for modest amounts, and the written offer shows you which is which.
Silver is the first sort. Silver proof sets carry 90% silver coins in many years, so those sets hold metal value even when collector demand is quiet. We pull them out first and confirm the silver with non-destructive testing, then go through the clad sets year by year. Proof coins are struck twice on polished dies for collectors, and that mirror finish shows every fingerprint and hazy spot.
Storage leaves its mark on a set. One kept in a hot attic in South Philly or a damp basement near the Delaware River can develop milky toning or spots, while one kept in a bedroom dresser often looks the way it did when it arrived. Please leave the coins in their holders. Cracking a case open to wipe a coin can scratch it, and a set in its original packaging is easier for us to resell.
Mint sets hold uncirculated coins and get the same careful review. Each set is checked at the table for date, mint mark, condition and eye appeal while you watch, and the written offer lists the sets one by one. Accept the offer and you are paid the same visit, by cash, check, or wire for a large group. Decline and the sets go back with you, along with the list.
A closet full of sets can be a lot to box up and carry, so for larger collections and estates, ask about a home visit when you call 215-798-9204. Bring a government-issued photo ID if you plan to sell. We return calls the same business day, from Society Hill to Moorestown.

Questions
Common questions
Are my proof sets worth more than face value?
Many are and some are not. Silver proof sets from years with 90% silver coins hold metal value, and certain clad years draw steady collector interest. Plenty of later clad sets sell for modest amounts. We go through each set at your appointment and write down what it is worth to us, so you can see which ones carry the value.
What is the difference between a proof set and a mint set?
Proof coins are struck twice on polished dies for collectors and usually have a mirror finish. Mint sets hold uncirculated coins, packed by the Mint as a set. Both come from the U.S. Mint, and both are priced on collector demand, with silver content added in when a set holds 90% silver coins. We buy both kinds.
Should I take the coins out of the plastic?
No. Leave every coin in its original holder or sleeve. Opening a sealed proof set and handling the coins can leave fingerprints or hairline scratches, and most collectors pay less for a set out of its packaging. If a case is already cracked, leave it as it is and bring it in. We can still evaluate the coins inside.
I have fifty years of sets. Do I have to bring them all?
You can, but you do not have to carry them across town. For larger collections and estates, ask about a home visit when you call 215-798-9204. If you would rather meet somewhere else, we set a private place when you book. Either way, every set is reviewed in front of you and listed on a written offer.
Do you buy proof Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles?
Yes. Proof American Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles in their Mint boxes are welcome. The one ounce coins hold a full troy ounce of silver or gold, which gives them a firm floor, and some years carry extra collector demand on top of the metal. Bring the box and certificate if you have them, though we can evaluate the coins without.
