Doylestown
Doylestown, central Bucks and the old farm estates
Doylestown has been the Bucks County seat since the early 1800s, and the borough center around State and Main Streets still has the brick and stone buildings of a 19th century county town. Farmland and old stone farmhouses surround it in Buckingham, Plumstead and the other central Bucks townships, and plenty of those properties have passed down through one family for a long time.
Henry Chapman Mercer gave the town its odd landmarks: Fonthill, his poured concrete home, the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and the Mercer Museum, packed with the tools of early American trades. Many Doylestown families share his habit of keeping old things, and estates here can reach back well before the Civil War. The James A. Michener Art Museum, named for the author who grew up in Doylestown, sits in the old county jail.
That is why large cents and half cents, struck at Philadelphia from 1793 to 1857, can turn up in central Bucks, sometimes in a tin found while a farmhouse is being cleared out. Indian Head cents, two-cent pieces from 1864 to 1873 and tiny three-cent silver pieces often come along with them, and the small ones are easy to miss in the bottom of a tin. Early copper is graded with color notes, red, red-brown or brown, and cleaning lowers the grade, so leave every coin exactly as you found it.
Old paper money is another common Bucks County find. Large-size notes printed before 1929 and National Bank Notes from small-town Pennsylvania banks have a following among regional collectors, so a note with a Bucks County town printed on it deserves a careful look. Small pre-1933 gold shows up in these estates too, mostly $2.50 quarter eagles and $5 half eagles, and we grade each one before talking about its gold.
Up the Delaware, New Hope has drawn painters since the early 1900s and antique dealers for decades, and collectors there often have world coins and odd pieces picked up at estate sales. Wherever the coins come from in central Bucks, we meet by appointment and set the place when you book. For a farm estate or a house full of collections, ask about a home visit, and nothing has to be packed up or moved until you have seen the written offer.

Questions
Selling coins and gold in Doylestown
We found a tin of old pennies cleaning out a farmhouse near Doylestown. Should we clean them?
Please don't. Cleaning lowers the grade and can cut the value of early copper sharply. Keep them dry, leave them in the tin or put them in paper envelopes, and bring them as they are. We sort large cents, Indian Heads and wheat cents and price each better coin separately.
Do you buy coins from New Hope and the river towns?
Yes, we buy from New Hope and the towns along the Delaware in Bucks County. The meeting place is set when you book. Owners of larger collections and estates can ask about a home visit, and the evaluation is always free.
Do you buy the gold jewelry in an estate too?
Yes, gold jewelry can go on the same list. It is sorted by karat, tested without acid or scratching and weighed. Signed or antique pieces that may be worth more as jewelry are set aside and noted, and coins, paper money and gold all appear on one written, item-by-item offer.
